The role

Key Accountabilities

Accountable to the Director of Medical Studies, based in the School of Medical Education (Faculty of Medical Sciences), to provide clinical and academic leadership to the MBBS programme in South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation NHS Trust and form the key link between Newcastle University and undergraduate education delivery in the trust.  You will be a key member of the MBBS management team, working under the direction of the Director of Medical Studies, as well as the Degree Programme Director and Deputy Director of Medical Studies. The management of the MBBS programme is being reviewed. Initially you will act as Sub Dean for the Wear Base Unit, pending review of that role.

 

  • Responsibility for delivery of the MBBS programme in their NHS Trust, ensuring that the MBBS programme meets the required GMC national standards, as well as university requirements.
  • Liaison and close working relationships with Director/ Deputy Director of Medical Studies, Degree Programme Director, Sub-Deans and other Curriculum Officers, Learning and Teaching Manager and Assistant Registrar for Assessment will be vital to ensure clear communication between the Medical School and NHS Trust.
  • Responsible for organising resources within the Trust to deliver MBBS teaching, developing strategy and an educational faculty, taking part in quality assurance and undertaking appraisals of senior staff members within their team, under the direction of the Director of Medical Education.
  • To be an active member of the MBBS programme- teaching, assessing, interviewing prospective students and representing when required the MBBS programme at functions.
  • To represent the University within the NHS Trust
  • To be fully conversant with national initiatives in relation to MBBS curriculum planning, organisation and delivery through national networks and GMC initiatives; keeping up to date regarding best evidence medical education.
  • Demonstrating scholarship, innovation and leadership alongside programme delivery.

 

The Person (Essential)

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

  • Evidence of successful leadership within medical education.
  • Experience of interfacing with relevant external organisations.
  • Experience of quality management processes in UK higher education.
  • Experience of teaching and/or training and assessment in MBBS curricula.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Newcastle MBBS curriculum.
  • Prior or current involvement at senior level in the Newcastle curriculum.
  • Experience of managing students with problems.
  • Ability to manage/drive change.
  • Evidence of staff appraisal and management, including evidence of dealing with difficult situations and problem solving.
  • Financial management.
  • Recognition of teaching and or leadership though membership or fellowship with HEA, AoMEd, FMLM or equivalent bodies.

Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education at or working towards Masters Level.
