Degree (graduate applicants)
Graduate entrants join the 5 year Medicine programme in Year 2, and so require additional relevant study covering the equivalent of Year 1 medical studies. Applications are accepted preferentially from students or graduates of the 4 feeder streams below, with, or expecting to attain, an upper second class honours degree:

- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences, School of Biosciences, Cardiff University (BC97)

In addition, graduates with, or expecting to attain, an upper second class honours degree in a relevant undergraduate degree are invited to contact the school for consideration of their suitability on an individual basis to join the programme in Year 2. Consideration will include recognition of prior professional experience and learning and a knowledge assessment to be completed. Dental graduates aiming to specialise in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) will be considered for UCAS A101 if supported by an academic reference or a reference from a Maxillofacial Surgeon. The British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (https://www.baoms.org.uk/) provides information on training in OMFS. Other dental graduates intending to qualify and practise in Medicine will be considered for either UCAS A100 or A101.

BBB/ABC at A-level/Scottish Highers or equivalent including Biology and an additional science from the list below:

English language or Welsh language at GCSE grade B/6 or equivalent and 7 GCSEs including grade B/6 in GCSE Maths, Biology and Chemistry, or equivalent qualifications (level, subjects and grade).

You must show an awareness of the UK healthcare system and the nature of the medical training in your personal statement and at interview.

You must have taken the UCAT within two-years of applying. We will use UCAT scores in our application assessment procedure in deciding who to invite to interview.

Should you be selected, you will be invited to attend an interview. We use the multiple mini interview (MMI) format, which is a series of short, carefully timed interview stations that you will rotate around in turn. All applicants must attend in person for interview.

Overall 32 points excluding theory of knowledge and extended essay. Two science subjects from Chemistry, Biology, and either Mathematics or Statistics, but not Mathematical Studies at HL, with 6 being achieved in either Chemistry or Biology. Chemistry or Biology must be offered at SL with score of 7, if not at HL. If Maths and English Language are not offered within the diploma they should be offered as GCSE subjects with at least grade B.

Attained academic qualifications, Level 2, (and Level 3, if offered) are prioritised, but a UCAT tariff will then also be applied should we are oversubscribed with applicants with exceptional academic scores to either help select which applicants to interview or post interview in tie-break situations.
Use (or not) of the UCAT is only be determined each year after we have assessed the academic score of all the applicants.
If we need to use a UCAT cut-off score, we are unable to predict in advance what this score would be as it varies year to year and depends on the scores of applicants that year. Previous year cut-off scores are not helpful.

Applicants will be required to provide references to evidence work experience if invited to attend a selection centre: 70 hours (the equivalent of around ten days) of prior work experience in a healthcare or allied setting, as a volunteer, or in a paid capacity, as a helper to someone with healthcare needs. Evidence of experience working in a healthcare environment can include being a Care Assistant in a care home/hospital, a volunteer in a hospital, visiting someone in their home to care for them, and working in a hospital lab or other healthcare setting. This work experience must have taken place in the 3 years prior to the date of application. Shadowing a doctor/healthcare professional can only count for a maximum of 20 hours against the minimum requirement of 70 hours. Applicants may apply without the required 70 hours however they must be working towards it. It would then become a condition if an offer was made.

Applicants should however note from our guidelines that the selection process, which will be points based for the A101 programme will be

You will be required to write a personal statement as part of your UCAS application, and this will be seen by the admissions departments for each of your course choices.
At Manchester, we do not usually read the personal statement that comes to us via UCAS; instead, we ask applicants to complete a Non-Academic Information Form.
There are some circumstances where we will look at the personal statement, so it is important that you complete it. The sorts of areas we would expect to see covered in the personal statement are as follows:
