Entry requirements for 2025 start

Applicants must be in their final year or have completed their initial degree. The offer for a place on A100 is subject to achievement of a BSc Honours degree 2:1 or above. 

AAA at A-level including Chemistry and Biology. The Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (WBA) with an overall grade A will be considered in lieu of an A-level alongside grade A in both Biology and Chemistry A level. Advanced Higher: BB grades (including Chemistry and Biology) along with Scottish Higher grades AAAAB.

All applicants (including all graduates) must have grade 6/B GCSE (or equivalent qualification) in Mathematics, English Language, and Double Award Science (6,6 or B/B) or Chemistry and Biology. Applicants receive a score based on the four subjects above and the five best other GCSE (or equivalent level) results. No results below 6/B are scored.

IB Diploma with a minimum overall score of 36 and 6,6,6 in 3 Higher level subjects. Must include grade 6 in HL Biology or Chemistry AND grade 6 in one other HL science from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or Statistics. Must also include grade 7 in SL Biology or Chemistry if not taken at HL. All offers exclude Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.

A minimum of an upper second class (2:1) Honours degree in a relevant life science subject. This should be the first degree obtained.
Candidates with further or higher degrees must also meet this minimum requirement in their first degree.
Previous academic attainment will also be taken into account.
All offers to current PhD students will be conditional on the formal submission and written confirmation of the acceptance of their PhD dissertation.
Up-to-date study skills are required.
Applicants must have undertaken academic study in the last 3 years prior to entry on the Medicine programme.
Acceptable academic study would include an undergraduate degree, a master's, PhD or any qualification to SCQF Level 6 (with a minimum of 24 credits).
An Open University 30 credit module would also be acceptable.

AAA at A level to include Chemistry and another science. Widening access: ABB

AAAAB at Scottish Highers to include Chemistry and another science. Offers are conditional on BBB in S6 exams. Widening access: AAABB

GCSE - We require Biology, English, and Mathematics at least to Grade B/6, if not studied at A-Level (A2).

Scottish Nationals - We require Biology at least to grade A at National 5 and Mathematics and English at least to grade B at National 5, if not studied at Higher.

SWAP East Access to Medical Sciences (AAA and over 80% in all key subject areas)

37 points (minimum) including 6, 6, 6 at Higher level, to include chemistry and another science (from biology, physics or mathematics) at Higher Level, plus three subjects at Standard Level with an average of grade 6, to include Biology at least to Standard level 6.

If you have already completed a degree, MBChB applications will be considered from graduates with a 2:1 or above who have studied a science related programme, including Psychology, which has been awarded in the two years prior to application. If you graduated prior to this but have undertaken postgraduate study in the past two years, you are also encouraged to apply.

Graduates must have grades ABB at A Level which must include Biology and Chemistry, at least one of which must be at Grade A or above with the other at minimum Grade B, as well as one other subject. A Levels in General Studies, Critical Reasoning, Citizenship and Key Skills will not be accepted.

Graduate applicants must also meet the GCSE requirements outlined in the standard entry criteria above. Graduates will therefore be required to undertake the full programme.

We will also consider applications from students who are in the early stages of another non-medical degree who wish to withdraw and/or have not completed a previous non-medical degree, as long as our standard MBChB entry criteria are met. No recognition of prior learning (RPL) will be considered on this basis.

We will not accept applications from students who wish to transfer from other medical programmes or who have previously started a medical degree but failed to progress on this.

Grades AAA at A Level are required. These must include Biology and Chemistry and one other subject.

While Biology and Chemistry are both required at Grade A or above, where Grade A* is achieved in either Biology or Chemistry (or both Biology and Chemistry), the third A Level subject will be accepted at Grade B or above.
A Levels in General Studies, Critical Reasoning, Citizenship and Key Skills will not be accepted.

Scottish Highers: AAAAB or above and including Biology, Chemistry and three other subjects.

All A Level qualifications, or accepted equivalents, must have been obtained within the two years prior to application.

Pass Diploma with 36 points or more to include three subjects at higher level, with at least 6 points in Biology, 6 points in Chemistry and one other subject, plus three further subjects at standard level with a minimum of 5 points each. If you are studying International Baccalaureate Biology and/or International Baccalaureate Chemistry in combination with other A Level subjects, this can be accepted as long as 6 points at higher level are achieved in these subjects.

You will also need at least five GCSEs at Grade B or Grade 6 or above (or equivalent) at the time of application, including Biology, Chemistry, English Language and Mathematics. GCSE Double Science Awards, at Grades 6-6 or B-B or above, will also be accepted in lieu of separate GCSEs in Biology and Chemistry.

Completion of a Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) approved Access to Higher Education Diploma (Medicine) (www.qaa.ac.uk/docs/qaa/access-to-he/access-to-he-diploma-subject-descriptor-medicine.pdf?sfvrsn=b0d4ca81_26). 60 credits overall, with 45 graded Level 3 credits with at distinction. 

The course must comply with the QAA’s subject descriptor for Medicine. It is the applicant's responsibility to check that the Access diploma meets the requirements before enrolling. Applicants who have studied for level-3 or university-level qualification less than 3 years before commencing the Access course will not be considered.  The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Medicine) must have been obtained within the two years prior to application. Access courses taken in place of resitting A-levels will not be considered. You must meet the standard GCSE (or equivalent) requirement.

2.1 - Must meet subject requirement in either Biology or Chemistry related study. This can be met via recent A-Level study or recent degree study. Minimum GCSE and A Level requirements for graduates apply.

A Level: AAA including Biology or Chemistry in the first sitting

Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers: A minimum of three subjects to be studied at Secondary 6 (S6) and predicted or achieved either BBB in Secondary Six (S6) Advanced Highers including Biology or Chemistry in the first sitting or AB in Secondary Six (S6) Advanced Highers including Biology or Chemistry plus an additional Higher Level at grade A taken in Secondary Six (S6), in the first sitting.

34 points overall with Higher Level 666 including Biology or Chemistry.

Six GCSEs at grade 7/A or above, including Mathematics, English Language and either two single science subjects (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) or Double Science. Alternatively, Science, Additional Science and Further Science GCSEs are accepted.

Scottish National 5s are accepted in lieu of GCSEs with a minimum of 6 subjects at grade A including Mathematics, English Language and two science subjects (Lifeskills Mathematics is not accepted). English Language required at grade B.

Access courses are accepted from applicants who have not previously studied two or more science subjects at A Level in the last 3 years.

UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, with a preference for a medical related subject for example: Biomedical Sciences/Medical Sciences/Nursing/Paramedic Science. However we will also consider applicants with a UK 2:1 honours degree in other science subjects (Biology; Chemistry; Mathematics or Physics) and those with non-science subjects who also have an SQA Higher, A Level, or equivalent, in Chemistry at B.

Standard:
SQA Highers: AAAAA by end of S5 and BB at Advanced Higher in S6.
A Levels: A*AA.

Minimum (Widening Access):
SQA Highers: AAABB by end of S5 and BC at Advanced Higher in S6.
A Levels: AAA.

Required Subjects:
SQA: Highers: Chemistry and two from Biology, Mathematics/Applications of Mathematics or Physics. For some applicants this subject combination is not possible at S5. Students who meet the grade requirements in S5 but are missing one or more sciences may take the missing subject(s) in S6. Human Biology may replace Biology.

A Levels: Chemistry at A* (A if eligible for minimum entry requirements) and one from Biology/Human Biology, Mathematics, or Physics at A. Only one of Mathematics or Further Mathematics will be considered.

National 5s: Biology, Chemistry, English and Mathematics at B. We accept Higher Applications of Mathematics at C in place of National 5 Mathematics at B. Offers are conditional on S6 performance.

GCSEs: Biology, Chemistry, English and Mathematics at A or 7 (B or 6 if eligible for minimum entry requirements). Double Award combined sciences, or equivalent, at AA/77 (BB/66 if eligible for minimum entry requirements) may replace GCSE grades in sciences. Additional Applied Science and Applied Science are not accepted.

Standard:
IB: 40 points with 766 at HL (7 in Chemistry).

Minimum (Widening Access):
IB: 37 overall with 666 at HL.

Required Subjects:
HL: Chemistry at 7 (6 if eligible for minimum entry requirements) and one other science subject. SL: 666 (555 if eligible for minimum entry requirements) to include Mathematics: Analysis and approaches or Mathematics: Applications and interpretation, English and Biology (if not at HL). If Mathematics and English Language do not form part of your IB diploma we will also accept GCSE, or equivalent, at A or 7 (B or 6 if eligible for minimum entry requirements).

SWAP Access to Medical Studies

Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) that comply with the QAA subject descriptor

Where applicants have been out of Level 3 studies for more than 2 years they would be required to have taken the GAMSAT.

A Levels: A*AA to include grade A in Biology and Chemistry

Scottish Advanced Highers: AAA to include grade A in Biology and Chemistry

Scottish Highers: AAAAA to include grade A in Biology and Chemistry

IB: 38/766 to include HL6 in Biology and Chemistry

Grade B or 6 in English language.

QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma with 30 L3 credits at Distinction and 15 L3 credits at Merit. To include 15 L3 credits at Distinction in a Biology-related subject and 15 L3 credits at Distinction in a Chemistry-related subject.

UK 2.1 Honours outcome in a four-year suitable BSc degree. Suitable degrees will include Biology and Chemistry.

Suitable subjects (not exclusive): Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Biology, Immunology, Neuroscience, Physiology.

International degrees must be four-year Honours degrees and we typically accept the equivalent to a UK 2.1 outcome. Certain countries must meet stipulated GPA requirements.

SQA:
Standard entry: AAAAB Higher at end of S5 + BB Advanced Higher (mandatory subjects: Higher Chemistry, Biology and either Maths/Physics) Nat 5 English at B. UCAT.

Adjusted entry: AAABB or AAAAC* Higher at end of S5 + BB Advanced Higher (mandatory subjects: Higher Chemistry*, Biology and either Maths/Physics). *C cannot be in Higher Chemistry. Nat 5 English at B. UCAT.

A level (UK only): AAA including Chemistry and Biology or Physics or Mathematics. GCSE English at Grade B or 6. GCSE Biology at Grade B or 6 (if not studied at A-level).

UK A level candidate: GCSE English (Language or Literature) at 6/B. GCSE Biology at 6/B if not taken at A Level (A required if attempted at A Level).

SQA Higher/Adv Higher candidate: Nat 5 English at B.

Overall 38. Scores 6, 6, 6 at HL.

Mandatory HL subjects: Chemistry and Biology. HL Maths recommended.

Mandatory SL: English at grade 6. SL Physics or Maths (HL recommended). UCAT.

Applicants must have completed three distinct A Levels (or equivalent), studied and awarded concurrently, and have achieved a minimum of score of BBB in their initial sitting. We are unable to accept equivalence; a minimum score of B must have been achieved in all subjects.

• We do not consider Biology and Human Biology to be distinct subjects, and do not accept General Studies, Applied Science, Citizenship, and Critical Thinking.
• A Levels must have been completed within a three year period
• Applicants may have repeated or restarted Year 12 a single time with no restrictions

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient grounding in Biology and Chemistry. This can be from either:

A Level Entry

*Where Biology and Chemistry were not taken in first sitting of A Levels, AAA must have been achieved in the first sitting with AA achieved in Biology and Chemistry within 1 year of subsequent study.

• Applicants must complete the International Baccalaureate with Biology and Chemistry at higher level. All third subjects are accepted.
• Applicants who did not complete a GCSE equivalent will be required to achieve Grade 5 in English Language A or English Lang/Lit A, and Maths at either Standard or Higher Level
• The International Baccalaureate must be completed within a three year period
• Applicants may repeat or restart Year 12 a single time with no restrictions
• Applicants who are repeating or who have repeated Year 13 must have achieved a minimum score of 31, with 5,5,5 at Higher Level in their initial sitting. We are unable to accept equivalence; a minimum score of 5 must have been achieved in all subjects
• Applicants applying with predicted grades should have a prediction of no lower than 35, with 6,6,5 at Higher Level, with 6 in Biology and Chemistry
• Applicants applying with achieved grades must have either met the offer requirement, or be resitting to achieve the offer requirement

• Applicants must have achieved 6 GCSEs (or equivalent) in the grade range 9/A* - C/4 by the time of application*
• Applicants must have achieved, or be working towards, grade 6/B or better in GCSE English Language (or equivalent)**

Applicants seeking to enter Medicine as a career change may apply having completed a recognised Access programme, provided three or more years have passed since their previous highest achieved qualification.

Please note that the standard offer is likely to be A*AA with the A* in either Chemistry or Biology.

AAA grades in Advanced Highers including Chemistry and Biology and one Science or Maths subject and one additional subject at Scottish Higher.

Minimum 38 points overall including 6 in Biology and Chemistry at Higher level. Grade 5 in Standard level English is required.

Please note that the standard offer is likely to be 39 points overall including 7 and 6 in Biology and Chemistry at Higher level.

Minimum of GCSE grade B in English Language or equivalent qualification.

There is no longer any other GCSE or Scottish Nationals requirement.

Minimum of 2i in any discipline

Must have either
(a) BBB at A-Level, including: biology or chemistry; plus one from biology, chemistry, economics, maths/further maths/statistics, physics, psychology; plus any third academic subject (not general studies/critical thinking/citizenship studies)
or
(b) GAMSAT (see web site for details of required scores)

Must also have GCSE minimum 6/B in English language, maths and sciences (combined science or biology + chemistry + Minimum of upper second-class honours (2i) in any subject, must have A-Level grades of BBB or better with same subject requirements as listed for school-leavers, must have minimum GCSE grade 6/B in English language, maths and sciences, GAMSAT accepted in lieu of A-Level and/or science GCSE requirements physics); GAMSAT may be offered in lieu of science GCSEs.

A-Level A*AA to include (a) biology or chemistry, (b) one more from biology, chemistry, economics, further maths, maths, physics, psychology, statistics, (c) any third reformed A-Level, but only one maths subject (maths, further maths or statistics) may be included in the three A-Levels. Practical endorsements must be achieved for biology, chemistry and physics A-Levels.

Higher AAAAA including two from biology/chemistry/physics plus Advanced Higher AB in two sciences (biology/chemistry/physics).

GCSE or Scottish National 5 minimum of five at grade 7/A or higher. English language (including spoken English), maths and sciences (combined science or biology chemistry and physics) must be achieved at a minimum of grade 6/B. International GCSE (IGCSE) single-award combined science not accepted.

Minimum of 37 points (including ToK/EE) including 7 or 6 in Higher Level biology or chemistry plus one more from biology, chemistry, economics, maths (any), physics or psychology. Alternatively, 766 in three Higher Level subjects including biology or chemistry plus one more from biology, chemistry, economics, maths (any), physics or psychology. Any science (biology/chemistry/physics) not taken at Higher Level must be offered at Standard Level grade 5 or GCSE grade 6 or equivalent (combined science accepted).

Any Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) conforming to the QAA subject descriptor for medicine.
