Only Access to HE (medicine) courses that meet the subject descriptor approved by QAA in 2021.

Bioscience graduates will be considered with minimum 2:1 (upper second class honours) undergraduate degree (or international equivalent) in a Biosciences subject with both Biology and Chemistry content.
All other graduates will be considered with minimum 2:1 AND grades AA at A-Level in both Biology and Chemistry (or international equivalent).

QAA Access to Medicine/Dentistry HE Diploma taken at a UK Further Education College full time over one year may be considered. Of the 45 Level 3 credits, 39 credits must be from units at Distinction with the remaining 6 Level 3 credits at Merit.

If applicant has a 2:1 degree in a biological, biomedical or a health science subject then A level grades of BBB including two from Biology, Chemistry or Psychology will be considered; for any other degree subject A level grades should be AAB including two from Biology, Chemistry or Psychology.

AAA including two from Biology, Chemistry and Psychology or AAB in three A-levels (as above) plus an EPQ, 4th AS-level or 4th A-level subject at B.
Scottish Highers: AAAAB at Scottish Highers plus AA in Advanced Highers in both Biology & Chemistry.

36 points overall, including three higher level subjects at 6,6,6, and three standard level subjects at 5,5,5.  Higher level subjects must include two from Biology, Chemistry and Psychology.

GCSEs: A minimum score of 13 points from eight subjects (A or A* or 7-9 = 2 points; B or 6 = 1 point). The eight subjects must include either combined science trilogy as two GCSE qualifications or Biology, Chemistry and Physics as individual subjects, plus Maths and English Language, all at grade B/6 or above. If Biology or Chemistry is not studied at A-level (see below), then applicants must have achieved at least grade 7/A at GCSE.

National 5: At least seven subjects attained by the end of S4 including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English Language, Mathematics, plus at least two other subjects. Required grades: mostly As, none less than B.

Access to HE diploma (medicine) that comply with the QAA national framework and subject descriptors.

Minimum 2:1 honours degree in any discipline awarded within the last three years plus three A Levels at grades ABB, to include Chemistry and Biology one of these at grade A or equivalent international qualification.

A minimum of six GCSEs at grade 5 or above required in Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry or Dual Science. Please note that all aspects of an academic history will be taken into consideration during shortlisting.

A levels: candidates are scored on a maximum of 3 A levels, A* are not scored higher than A grades.

Typical offer AAA including Chemistry and Biology.

Human Biology, Sports Science, Further Mathematics and Statistics are only accepted as a 4th A level noting that 4th A levels do not form part of our scoring system.

We welcome general studies and critical thinking as a fourth A2, but they do not typically form part of our offer.
EPQs are not considered within our scoring.

Scottish Highers:
Typical offer: AAAAB at Higher including Biology and Chemistry, and AA at Advanced Higher, including A in Chemistry or Biology.

Typical offer: overall score of 36 points with a mark of 6 in 3 Higher Level subjects one of which must be Chemistry and Biology. If English and Maths not offered at GCSE, this must be offered with a mark of at least 5 at Standard level.

Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) that conforms to the QAA subject descriptor.

We will NOT accept applications from people who have:

• achieved below 2i in a previous degree unless there is evidence of substantial subsequent experience in a healthcare-based or academically and/or professionally demanding career
• commenced an Access diploma less than 3 years after completing A levels, other qualifications or a degree

60 credits, with 45 of these credits coming from units which are concerned with academic subject content at Level 3 and graded; the remaining 15 credits come from ungraded Level 2 or Level 3 units. All units (60 credits) must be passed, with all graded level 3 units at distinction.

A minimum of 6 GCSEs grade 6 or above required in Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry or Dual Science.
Please note that applicants applying with these minimums are unlikely to be shortlisted to interview and that scoring is based on 8 GCSEs.

Applicants must have achieved or be predicted a minimum of an upper second-class honours (or equivalent) in their Bachelor's or integrated Master's degree in order to be considered. We will consider graduate applicants from any discipline, provided the applicant meets our minimum GCSE requirements and has BBB or ABC at A-level including a B grade in either Chemistry or Biology. Applicants must have completed, or be in the final year of their degree when they apply.

We will not consider a second undergraduate degree, Masters or PhD in lieu of obtaining 2:1 or 1st class honours in your first degree. Graduates in their final year who do not provide a suitable academic reference from their current institution will not be considered.

We require school leavers to have predicted or obtained grades of A*AA at A-level, in three subjects including Chemistry or Biology and one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology, but excluding General Studies, Citizenship Studies, Critical Thinking or Global Perspectives. We will also consider AAA (as per subjects above) plus EPQ at grade B

We will consider Scottish Advanced Highers either alone or in combination with A-levels. Our standard offer is AAA, to include Chemistry or Biology, and one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology. We will also consider the two sciences at Advanced Higher (grade AA) plus 3 other subjects at Highers level (grades AAB). We will not consider you if you are only taking Scottish Highers.

Applicants must have achieved at least a grade B or 6 in English Language (as a first language), Maths, and two sciences (including Chemistry and Biology or Double Science). For students taking Methods and Applications in Maths our minimum requirement is a Grade B or 6 in both, but we will only score the Methods in Maths.

We do not specify a minimum number of A* or 8/9 grades at GCSE. However, we do take GCSE performance into consideration when selecting applicants for interview, as competition for our places is so intense.

We also accept the International Baccalaureate (IB) with a minimum score of 34 points overall, and a minimum score of 7,6,6 in three Higher Level subjects including Chemistry or Biology, and one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology. The 7 would need to be in one of the sciences as mentioned above. We will also consider candidates with an overall score of 36 and 6,6,6 in their three Higher Level subjects including two sciences as mentioned above.

Only those that offer QAA approved medicine subject descriptor.

You can apply for this course (A10L) if you already have a degree. The entry requirements for this route are:

• a 2:1 degree in any subject
• the minimum A level requirements for this course
• a minimum of GCSE level 4 (C) in maths and English language

If you're currently studying for a degree, you can apply for medicine during any year of your existing studies. Do not withdraw from your current studies as your offer may be conditional on the completion of your current degree. If you chose this route, your A levels and GCSEs must meet the course entry requirements.

If you need your degree result to be able to meet the academic entry requirements, you may apply through UCAS at the beginning of your final year of study. In these cases, your offer to study Medicine will be conditional on achieving the necessary academic requirements. Your current degree must:

• be an honours degree
• evidenced by sending ratified documentation (a copy of your final degree transcript or your certificate) by 20 July 2024
• have been completed within the intended length of the qualification for example, three years for a BSc or four years for an MSc

If you are applying with an undergraduate (bachelors or undergraduate masters) degree you may not need to meet the standard A level requirements.

If you have achieved or are predicted to achieve a first-class honours degree at undergraduate level in a relevant subject with enough biology and chemistry content you may not have to meet the the A level requirements*. However, you'll still need to achieve at least a 4 (C) in GCSE in both Maths and English Language.

Any offers made without the A level requirements are conditional on you achieving a first in your primary degree before starting the course.

If you have achieved or are predicted to achieve a first-class honours degree at undergraduate level in an non- relevant degree or undergraduate masters degree then the A-level requirement must still be met and they must have achieved a minimum of GCSE grade C (4) in English Language and Maths

Degrees must be completed in the natural length intended for the qualification (generally, 3 years for Bachelors, and 4 years for integrated Masters).

Accelerated degrees resulting in the award of a BSc Hons (completed over two years rather than three). These applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. GCSE Maths and English Language must still be achieved at a minimum of a 4 (C) grade.

AAA: must include biology (or human biology) and chemistry.

A pass is required in science practical tests, where these are assessed separately. We do not accept citizenship studies, critical thinking, general studies, or global perspectives as your third A level subject.

Your A levels must be studied over a maximum two-year period and three A levels have been passed at the required grades in one sitting. A levels that have taken longer than two years to complete are not usually accepted.

IB 34 (6, 6, 6 at Higher Level including biology and chemistry, excluding core component with GCSEs stated (or equivalent).

A minimum of six GCSEs should have been studied over a two year period and that the required grades are achieved at one sitting

A minimum of six GCSEs at Level 7 (A), including both Biology and Chemistry, or double science and you must have achieved a minimum of a grade 6 (B) in Maths and English Language.

We will consider one GCSE subject resit in Maths, English Language, Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry or Double Science qualifications.

The achieved overall resit grade must be a minimum of Level 6 (B) in Maths or English Language, and a minimum of Level 7 (A) in Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry or Double Science (7,7) qualifications.

Usually a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree, in any discipline, for graduates or a 2:2 degree plus a pass in a higher qualification such as a Masters or PhD. International graduates can apply to A100. Most home graduates would apply to A101. All graduate applicants can  however apply to A100 if they have sat the GAMSAT admissions test.

A-levels in three subjects taken at one sitting after 2 years of study.

Grades AAA, to include Chemistry together with Biology, Physics or Maths, and a third academic subject. The Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate is accepted in lieu of a third academic subject.
Alternatively, A*AB is also accepted, but the A*A grades must include Chemistry together with either Biology, Physics or Maths.

Highers (SCQF level 6) in five subjects taken at one sitting after 1 year of study: comprising Chemistry and one of either Biology, Physics and Maths; minimum of AAAAB
plus Advanced Highers (SCQF level 7) in Chemistry and one of either Biology, Physics and Maths at grades AA.

GCSEs in nine subjects attained by the end of Year 11 which must include: English Language, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry at a minimum of score 6 ( grade B). Core & Additional Science is an acceptable alternative to the three individual sciences.

No more than two Level 2 BTEC qualifications or OCR awards will be considered as part of the 9 GCSEs/equivalents. These cannot be used as replacements for English Language, Maths and Science subjects. i.e. a minimum of 7 full GCSEs required.
Scottish

Minimum of SCQF level National 5 (Intermediate 2) in Biology, Chemistry, English Language, Mathematics, and at least three others attained by the end of S4.

36 points overall (at first sitting): Higher level (HL) a minimum of 6,6,6 to include Chemistry together with either Biology, Physics or Mathematics and a third academic subject. 5,5,5 at standard level (subjects not offered at HL).

• Alternatively, 36 points overall (at first sitting): Higher level (HL) a minimum of 7,6,5 but the 7 and 6 grades must include Chemistry together with either Biology, Physics or Mathematics in any order and 5 in a third academic subject. 5,5,5 at standard level (subjects not offered at HL).

Access to Higher Education (Medicine) qualifications from Local FE colleges (City of Liverpool, Wirral Metropolitan, and Southport) are considered. We also consider Access to Higher Education qualifications which comply with the QAAs subject descriptor for Medicine (developed in collaboration with the Medical Schools Council (MSC) selection alliance.

We welcome applications from graduates or those in their final year of study towards an undergraduate degree. You should have achieved or be predicted a minimum of an upper second (2:1) honours degree and should have achieved a minimum of BBB at A-level (32 IB) in your first sitting. Applicants with a relevant science degree are exempted from our subject specification at A-Level, but must still meet the BBB academic standard. Relevant subjects include most Biomedical and Life Sciences disciplines or other approved courses.

Our standard A-level offer is AAA including:

• Biology/Human Biology or Chemistry; and
• One of the following subjects from Chemistry; Biology/Human Biology; Physics; Psychology; Mathematics or Further Mathematics.

Scottish Highers
We require 4 Highers at grades AAAA by the end of Secondary 5. Grades should be achieved in the same sitting at first attempt. English language and any science subject (Maths, Chemistry or Biology) not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must have been achieved at SCQF level 5 (National 5, Intermediate II or Standard Grade Credit level grade 2 or above). Applicants also need Scottish Advanced Highers in addition to Scottish Highers.

Scottish Advanced Highers

We require at least two Advanced Highers at grades AA by the end of Secondary 6. Any of the following combinations are acceptable:

• three Advanced Highers at AAA, including Chemistry or Biology; a second science (from
  Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Psychology or Physics); plus one other rigorous academic subject;
• two Advanced Highers at grades AA, plus one A2-level subject at grade A (subjects as above);
• two Advanced Highers at grades AA, plus one new Higher at grade A (subjects to include Chemistry or Biology at Advanced Higher, plus one other science at Advanced Higher, and a further subject at Higher level).

You will also need Scottish Highers in addition to Scottish Advanced Highers.

36 points are required overall (to include core points) with at least 666 at higher level. If Maths and English Language are not offered as part of the Diploma, they should be offered at GCSE or IGCSE at grade B (6) or above. We accept both Maths options as part of the Diploma.

Major subjects must include Chemistry or Biology, plus another science (one from Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology or Mathematics) and one further subject at Higher Level.

We require at least seven GCSEs at grade A (7) or A* (8+).
English Language, Mathematics and at least two science subjects are required at GCSE minimum grade B (6). If Dual Award Science or Core and Additional Science are offered, the minimum required is BB (66).

Your Access course must be science-based and you must have 60 credits overall with 45 credits at Level 3. We require a minimum of 15 graded credits each in Biology and Chemistry. We require Distinctions in all Level 3 credits.

Applicants are also required to meet the English language requirements listed above and must offer GCSE Mathematics at grade B (6).

Applicants must have achieved, or expect to achieve, an honours degree in any discipline to at least an upper second class or first class Honours or integrated master's degree.

AAA at A level excluding Use of Mathematics, World Development, Communication and Culture. For Biology, Chemistry and Physics A Levels, we require a pass in the practical element.
AA at Advanced Higher and AAAAA at Higher. No requirement for science subjects.

A minimum of 36 points including minimum of grade 5 in all subjects.

No specific requirements but the best eight achieved grades at GCSE or equivalent level 2 qualifications are scored as part of the selection for interview, including (if taken) English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science (either Core & Additional Science or separate Biology/ Chemistry/ Physics). If less than eight GCSEs have been taken, scores from the taken GCSEs will be normalised.

We will accept any Access to HE Diploma conforming to the QAA subject descriptor for Medicine, including distance learning courses. Our grade requirement is Distinctions to be achieved in all graded credit modules. The further 15 ungraded credits can be a combination of level 2 and 3.
