Clinical Research Fellowship in Cancer (Gastroenterology or GI surgery)
University of Leicester

We are looking for a talented and motivated individual to join the Leicester Cancer Research Centre and our NIHR/Cancer Research UK Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. You will undertake a clinical research project aligned with COLO-PREVENT, a world first multicentre phase 2/3 prevention trial platform that is recruiting high-risk patients from the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. As part of this you will work with UK clinical leaders in gastroenterology and prevention. Patients are being offered interventions to assess whether re-purposed drugs (aspirin and metformin) or dietary agents (resveratrol) may help to prevent colorectal polyp development. You will be expected to support the clinical trial, and conduct research aimed at optimising the design of future prevention trials and understanding factors that influence patient participation, adherence and behaviours impacting on cancer risk, as well as exploring broader perceptions around cancer prevention in different populations. You will perform data and laboratory analyses, publish your findings in leading journals and submit for a higher research degree.
You will be based in the Leicester Cancer Research Centre at the Leicester Royal Infirmary hospital site. This work is one of the flagship projects of the recently renewed Leicester Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre and the new Personalised Cancer Prevention and Treatment theme of the Leicester NIHR Biomedical Research Centre.
Further Information
You will be responsible for supporting local patient recruitment to COLO-PREVENT and sample collection, as well as developing and conducting research aimed at improving the design of future prevention trials, including understanding barriers to participation through work with our Patient, Public, Involvement and Engagement representatives. You will perform data-analysis, write manuscripts and disseminate your results.
As part of this role, you may co-supervise MSc and BSc project students within your own speciality area, and you will have the opportunity to be involved in undergraduate and post-graduate teaching of medical students and junior doctors.
The post is suitable for a clinically trained investigator with previous experience in a gastroenterology specialty (gastroenterology or surgery) and who wishes to pursue a period of full-time research leading to a higher degree (MD or PhD). You must be a GMC registered medical practitioner holding a licence to practice and possessing MRCP (UK), MRCS or equivalent and MB BS or equivalent.
Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Professor Karen Brown (kb20@leicester.ac.uk).
